Teen Charged In Death Of 5-Year-Old
FLORENCE, S.C. — A 15-year-old boy has been charged in the beating death of a 5-year-old Florence boy.
Shanquan Pickett died Saturday about a day after someone struck him about the head and body with a round metal object.
Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said the teen was arrested at about 7 p.m. Tuesday. He will be charged with homicide by child abuse. The teen’s name has not been released because of his age.
Boone said a hearing is planned Thursday in Family Court in Florence.
Prosecutor Ed Clements III told the Morning News of Florence that he wants to charge the boy as an adult.
Coroner M.G. Matthews said Pickett died after he was taken off a respirator at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence on Saturday. He had been taken to the hospital late Friday afternoon.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, investigators were still looking for the object used in the child’s death.
