Cat Found Mutilated On PSU Campus
PORTLAND, Ore. — Police said someone is killing and mutilating cats and leaving the dead animals on the campus of Portland State University.
Public safety officers at PSU said the latest crime happened Thursday, and the Oregon Humane Society offered a reward of $1,000 for help in catching the cat killer.
Veterinary doctors who have examined the cats said the wounds are horrific, starting with blunt force trauma to the head.
“We found cause of death and then we found wounds beyond that that I’d characterize as purposeful mutilation,” doctor of veterinary medicine Kris Otteman said.
The mutilations seem incomprehensible to the staff at OHS, whose focus is improving the health of animals, and getting them adopted into caring homes.
“Animal cruelty is so wrong,” OHS volunteer Caroline Witt said. “Every single time I see it, I just fall right to tears. Sometimes I just wish I was there for them.”
A month before, campus safety officers said someone found four kittens outside the library, that were similarly tortured.
“Portland seems to be a pretty animal friendly town,” PSU student Lisa Cossette said. “Some people are weird, and do messed up stuff. I hope they catch ‘em.”
Some people are worried that someone capable of treating animals with such disdain may not stop there.
“We’re concerned. We know — it’s been proven — there’s a link between abuse or neglect of animals — or violence toward animals — and violence toward people,” Otteman said.
Campus safety officers and OHS staff said they’re hoping a tip will help them find the person who’s responsible for the violence against animals at PSU.
