Scout Leader Sentenced To 60 Years For Child Sex Assault

31 May, 2008 (10:54) | News

SAN ANTONIO — A Boy Scout leader convicted of sexually assaulting one of his Scouts will have to serve at least 30 years in prison before he is eligible for parole, a Bexar County jury decided late Friday afternoon.

James Hiatt was convicted Thursday on nine of 10 counts related to his fondling and sexual contact with a 12-year-old member of his troop.

Hiatt was sentenced to 60 years, but may serve more if the judge orders his sentences be served consecutively. He was convicted on four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a minor and five counts of indecency with a child.

After learning of his punishment, the victim’s mother told Hiatt how his actions have changed the boy forever.

“He will have to live with this horrible memory for the rest of his life, I will have to live with the guilt that I trusted my son’s welfare with you and you abused that trust,” she said.
