Police: Fullerton Teacher “Set-Up” by Ex-Wife

31 May, 2008 (11:00) | News

FULLERTON — Weapons and narcotics charges against a teacher at Sunny Hills High School have been dropped.

Police say the teacher was the victim of an elaborate set-up by someone who planted drugs and a weapon in his car.

His estranged wife and one of her acquaintances have been named as persons of interest but have not been arrested in the plot.

31 year old Gregory Abbott was charged with possession of a weapon on a school campus and possession of narcotics for sale.

But, the Orange County prosecutor’s office says it will not pursue the case believing that the drugs and weapon were planted in Abbott’s car.

According to Fullerton Police Sgt. Mike MacDonald, officers received an anonymous 911 call shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday, in which the caller claimed “he had purchased drugs from a person he believed to be a teacher at Sunny Hills.

“The caller also said the person, who he identified as Abbott, had a weapon in his vehicle.”

MacDonald said the Police Department’s High School Resource Officer contacted Abbott in his classroom and obtained permission to search his vehicle.

The search revealed an unloaded shotgun, some prescription drugs and a small amount of marijuana.

Abbott was booked into the city jail and released on $25,000 bail.

Fullerton Police Sgt. Mike MacDonald said that during an interview with detectives following his arrest, Abbott provided information which “has taken us in a direction away from Mr. Abbott as a suspect and, in fact, points toward him as being the victim of an elaborate set-up.”

MacDonald added the Police Department is “continuing to actively investigate new aspects of the case.”

Abbot has taught history at the high school for the past seven years.
