150 Dogs Seized From Gaston Home

GASTON, Ore. — Deputies cited a woman with animal neglect after they took 150 dogs, four birds and two horses from her home Thursday.
Washington County sheriff’s deputies said they went to the Patton Valley Road property on a report of animal abuse. They said they found the animals well-fed, but living in extreme filth, with feces-covered cages and kennels.
Dozens of cages were used to take the pets away from the property. Most of the dogs are Chihuahuas.
Deputies said Carolyn Ohlhauser, 59, lived at the home with her daughter and three grandchildren. The grandchildren weren’t living in the same part of the house as the dogs, according to deputies, but their mother could be cited because the house was unsanitary.
The children were voluntarily taken to a different home by their mother, and the Department of Human Services is investigating.
Ohlhauser, who was cited and released, has surrendered the animals to Washington County Animal Services, officials said.
Susan Field, a spokeswoman with the organization, said the large number of animals will stretch the shelter’s resources. She said they are asking for donations of money and high-quality adult and puppy food.
When the animals are stable and healthy, Field said the shelter will hold an adopt-a-thon.
Jutta Kress, who lives near the Gaston home, said she was surprised it has taken this long for the animals to be taken away.
“Just driving up there and getting out of the car, you can smell the feces and stuff,” Kress said.
