N.H. Homeless Double In State One-Day Count

24 March, 2008 (12:36) | new hampshire

CONCORD, N.H. — New Hampshire officials said more than 2,600 people were homeless on Jan. 30, twice the number of homeless counted in last year’s one-day annual count.

The point-in-time count helps the state assess the homeless situation. Last year’s count was done on Jan. 25 and found 1,300 homeless people.

This year’s count targeted local welfare offices, homeless shelters, hospitals, soup kitchens, food pantries, outreach workers and other providers serving homeless people.

Of those counted, 484 were not in shelters.

The increase in the number of homeless followed three years of mostly steady numbers of homeless found.

Health and Human Services Commissioner Nicholas Toumpas called the findings “sobering” and a startling reminder of the critical need for additional housing assistance in the state.
